‘Stranger Things: The First Shadow’ Bridges the Gap to Season 5 in Broadway Prequel

The Upside Down creeps into Broadway as Netflix’s hit series expands its mythology on stage

As anticipation builds for the fifth and final season of Stranger Things, fans are discovering that the supernatural story unfolding in Hawkins, Indiana has deeper roots than ever revealed on screen. A major narrative thread from the series’ next chapter connects directly to Stranger Things: The First Shadow, the Broadway play that dives into the origin of Vecna — the show’s most terrifying villain.

The official teaser for Season 5, released on July 16, signals an epic showdown led by Joyce, Hopper, and the teenage core cast against the monstrous forces of the Upside Down. Yet much of the emotional and mythological groundwork for that battle was laid not on screen, but on stage.

The First Shadow, which premiered on the West End in 2023 before opening on Broadway in April 2025, is a canonical prequel that follows Henry Creel — the boy who would become Vecna — during his teenage years at Hawkins High. The play doesn’t just explore Henry’s descent into darkness, but also features younger versions of Joyce, Hopper, and Bob Newby, offering crucial backstory to the adult characters central to the main series.

While the play stands alone as a dramatic piece of theatre, it operates in tight coordination with the show’s writers’ room. Characters and plotlines revealed in the play provide thematic and narrative depth to Season 5’s storyline, which picks up after Season 4’s dramatic cliffhanger — the shattering of Hawkins as a gateway to the Upside Down is opened.

Key revelations from The First Shadow include Joyce and Hopper’s direct involvement with Henry’s family prior to the events of the show. They investigate mysterious killings linked to Victor Creel, unaware that the true danger lies with Henry. Meanwhile, Henry’s encounters with the Black Void, Demogorgons, and the Mind Flayer foreshadow his evolution into the series’ ultimate antagonist.

Season 4 had already hinted at Henry’s transformation, revealing him as both “One,” the first subject in Dr. Brenner’s experiments, and the murderous force behind the 1959 Creel family tragedy. However, because Joyce and Hopper were off in Russia during those revelations, The First Shadow retroactively fills in what they already knew — but couldn’t act on.

The production aims to match the immersive and emotionally intense experience of the show itself. Netflix executives have described it as a unique theatrical spectacle that preserves the series’ essence while expanding its universe in ways that reward fans who follow both formats.

Although there are no confirmed plans yet for a global rollout, Netflix has expressed interest in bringing the production or its storytelling style to wider audiences, though it remains focused on preserving the theatrical magic that makes The First Shadow so compelling.

As for what comes next, Stranger Things Season 5 is scheduled to debut its first episodes in November. And while viewers won’t need to see the play to follow the series, those who do will be rewarded with a richer, more interconnected understanding of Henry Creel’s journey — from misunderstood teen to the psychic monster that threatens to end it all.
