Clueless the Musical: A Nostalgic, Preppy Party for ’90s Fans
Step back into the ’90s with the latest theatrical sensation, Clueless the Musical, now playing at the Trafalgar Theatre. This stage adaptation of the beloved 1995 film delivers a sunny, light-hearted romp filled with nostalgic nods to preppy fashion and the era’s unmistakable lingo.
Drawing inspiration from Jane Austen’s Emma, the musical follows Cher Horowitz—a rich, popular high school student with a penchant for meddling in her friends’ love lives. In her latest project, Cher targets new student Tai, aiming to pair her with the school’s most popular guys. However, as the plot unfolds, Cher learns that even in a seemingly perfect world, things don’t always go as planned.
Critics have noted that the production fully embraces its ’90s roots. The dialogue is sprinkled with era-specific catchphrases like “fly” and “fresh,” and the costumes evoke the iconic preppy style reminiscent of the decade. Although some feel the overabundance of nostalgia sometimes overshadows the comic timing, the energetic presentation keeps the audience engaged.
Musically, the show features a soundtrack penned by noughties pop singer KT Tunstall, with ’90s riffs paying homage to legendary bands such as Nirvana, REM, and the Backstreet Boys. While the intros are a delightful trip down memory lane, some critics mentioned that the lyrics and choruses occasionally lack lasting impact.
Standout performances include West End newcomer Emma Flynn as Cher Horowitz, who brings a bright-eyed innocence to the role despite the character’s flaws. Romona Lewis-Malley, playing Tai, captivates with her blend of sweetness and powerhouse vocals. Unexpected comic relief comes from Max Mirza as Elton and Isaac J Lewis as Christian—their playful performances, especially Mirza’s solo reminiscent of Right Said Fred’s “I’m Too Sexy,” add a buoyant layer to the show.
Though Clueless the Musical may not offer a profound message, it succeeds as a fun, energetic celebration of ’90s culture. More akin to an “airy coffee friend” who brings a burst of joy and then moves on, the production leaves audiences with a smile and a sense of carefree nostalgia.
Clueless the Musical runs at the Trafalgar Theatre until 14th June 2025, with shows every Monday to Saturday and matinees on Thursdays and Saturdays. The venue is conveniently located just outside Trafalgar Square, making it easily accessible from major transport hubs including Charing Cross and Embankment stations. For those longing for a playful trip back to the ’90s, this musical promises a memorable, if fleeting, experience.
