Andrew Lloyd Webber Collaborating with Jamie Lloyd on New Musical Inspired by The Illusionist

Andrew Lloyd Webber is reportedly working on his next big project: a new musical titled The Illusionist, inspired by the 2006 film of the same name. According to Deadline, Lloyd Webber’s latest endeavor will reunite him with Olivier Award-winning director Jamie Lloyd, who recently led a celebrated revival of Sunset Boulevard on Broadway.
Though loosely based on The Illusionist, the upcoming musical will diverge significantly from the film’s plot. Set in early 20th-century Vienna, the story follows a magician whose romance with a woman from a higher social class sparks intrigue and dramatic tension. Lloyd Webber, known for his extensive musical legacy including Cats and The Phantom of the Opera, is said to be crafting a score with an “operatic” feel, adding a new musical dimension to the tale of mystery and romance.
The musical is reportedly in the early stages, with only a few songs completed so far. British songwriter Bruno Major has joined Lloyd Webber in shaping the score, and the book is being co-written by Lloyd Webber and Chris Terrio, screenwriter of the original film.
One significant challenge for the production team will be integrating live illusions into the stage show. The search is underway for a skilled illusion creator to design the visual magic required to bring the show’s ambitious effects to life. While the musical’s timeline and premiere location have yet to be confirmed, The Illusionist promises a unique addition to Lloyd Webber’s celebrated portfolio, blending his musical vision with Jamie Lloyd’s innovative directorial approach.
