Rumour Has It: ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’ Set to Leap from Screen to Stage in Musical Debut

Helen Hunt

Get ready to toss your hair and grab your dancing shoes because the teen sensation that had us all swooning in the 80s is coming to the stage! That’s right, Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt’s fabulously fun flick ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’ is about to get a whole lot livelier as a musical adaptation!

Picture this: the story we all know and adore, with Janey, our favorite high school gymnast, defying her super strict Army dad to boogie her way into a TV dance contest – now with the added magic of a live musical score packed with the 80s hits we can’t help but adore. Think Cyndi Lauper’s anthems and more – it’s like stepping into a time machine, but with better sound and more pizzazz!

Sure, the movie was a sleeper at the box office back in the day, but it charmed its way into our hearts and became the cult classic we can’t get enough of. And guess what? This musical extravaganza is the first cab off the rank in an exciting team-up between the creative hotshots at Lively McCabe Entertainment and the tunesmiths at Primary Wave Music.

The brilliant Jennifer Werner of ‘The Book of Mormon’ fame is directing, and M. Dickson, with that ‘How I Met Your Father’ wit, is penning the script alongside the super talented Lauren Marcus from ‘Tick, Tick… Boom!’ fame. They’re cooking up a book for the musical that promises to blend laughs, 80s nostalgia, and chart-topping tunes.

Michael Barra, the big boss at Lively McCabe, is over the moon, saying this project is a dream come true, and they’re all thanking their lucky stars (and Amy Spies, of course) for the chance to adapt this iconic story and its unforgettable characters for the stage. With the fabulous tunes of the 80s lined up, they’re all set to sprinkle that extra special something on what’s sure to be a blockbuster hit.

And let’s not forget the powerhouse team of Michael Barra and Allison Bressi at Lively McCabe, alongside the groove masters Natalia Nastaskin and Ramon Villa from Primary Wave, who are joining forces to make sure this adaptation is nothing short of spectacular. Amy Spies herself is thrilled, saying she’s pumped to see her tale of empowering friendships and the journey of young women finding their feet take on a new life in the spotlight.
